WELL-WOMAN EXAM

Your well-woman exam visit can play a vital role in the early detection of potential health risks. The exam is primarily intended for preventative care but can also be done for women who are experiencing general health or sexual health issues. Your periodic exam will typically include a pap smear, a pelvic (reproductive) exam, and general health evaluation.

Who Should Get a Well-Woman Exam?

Any woman who is sexually active (regardless of her age) is encouraged to have a periodic well-woman exam. If you are not sexually active, 18 is generally an acceptable age for your first in-office appointment.

What Happens During My Appointment?

During your in-office visit, your ob-gyn will perform a general health evaluation and talk with you about your overall health. Depending on your age and individual needs, your ob-gyn will perform several tests.

A well-woman exam consists of three major parts;

  • General Health Exam. This includes a height/weight check, blood pressure check, and a general physical exam.
  • A Breast Exam. Here your doctor will closely examine your breasts for potential signs of cancer. Your ob-gyn also will show you how to perform a self-exam which should be done on a monthly basis.
  • A Pelvic Exam. During your reproductive exam, your ob-gyn will assess your gynecologic health and perform a pap smear for cervical cancer screening.

In most cases, women who are 40+ will also receive a referral for a mammogram exam every 1-2 years. After age 50, it is recommended you receive a mammogram annually.

How Often Should I Get a Well-Woman Exam?

In most cases, a well-woman exam should be performed on an annual basis. However, women with certain health risks may need to schedule appointments more often.

If you have a health problem or notice any changes in your body (such as unusual vaginal discharge or genital itching), you should immediately schedule a visit with your ob-gyn.

Why Should I Get a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman exam is crucial for early detection and prevention of health risks. Catching health problems in their early stages allows your doctor to keep you in optimal health.

Your well-woman exam is the ideal time to get to know your body. Visits are confidential and judgment-free. It’s important to be open and honest with your ob-gyn so that they may guide you toward the right treatment.
